Earth Wants Gender Equity:
A Discussion on the Connections between Women's Rights, Climate Change, and Sustainability
This session has been designed and conducted by Jonathan Yue and Nadiia Dubchak, both Class of 2019,
at Lawrenceville School's Community Day.
“The world’s women are the key to sustainable development,” U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon declared at the State of the Planet meeting, in 2010. Due to gender inequality, women usually remain the most vulnerable to environmental degradation. Nevertheless, as Women’s Environment & Development Organization explains, both female specialists and ordinary women stand “on the front lines of change": as resource managers in families across the world, women should play a central role in devising solutions. With the help of media materials and short case studies, this workshop will explore the different links between women’s rights, environmental justice, and sustainability. We will discuss possible methods of achieving gender equality and alleviating climate change, in the near future and in our own lives.
